At 3pm today, Post Fiji along with other 20 postal operators around the world will unveil a set of stamps carrying messages on HIV/AIDS awareness to accentuate the progress and challenges over the past 30 years in battling HIV & AIDS. Fiji is among Belarus, Iraq, Malawi and Uruguay to issue such commemorative stamps to coincide with the three-day high-level meeting on AIDS, which began at the UN Headquarters in New York on Wednesday 8 June and provides an opportunity to review progress and chart the future course of the global AIDS response.
Post Fiji in collaboration with UN Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) will today officially launch the commemorative stamps at the Suva General Post Office. The artwork for Fiji’s set of stamps was developed by local artist Sharon Light and will be available in denominations of 20 cents, 40 cents, 65 cents and $5. Each stamp depicting a theme most relevant to humanity’s ongoing battle with this deadly epidemic.
AIDS, an epidemic that has so far claimed nearly 30 million lives and looms like aforeboding shadow, waiting to claim others, continues to threaten the existence of future populations. As part of a global HIV campaign, the Universal Postal Union with the Joint UN Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), the International Labour Organization and UNI Global (which represents 900 trade unions worldwide) developed this initiative to raise awareness on such a critical issue.
Official First Day Covers and stamp sets on HIV/AIDS Prevention in Fiji are now available for purchase from Post Fiji’s Philatelic Bureau situated in the General Post Office or orders can be sent to orders@postfiji.com.fj .
Upcoming stamp releases by Post Fiji include Frangipanis of Fiji – a floral issue brought to life by a local artist and War Clubs of Fiji – revisiting symbols of our cultural heritage.
