Post Fiji embarked on a gift-collection initiative for prisoners’ children called "Angels in Fiji" at its post offices in early November to kick-start the festive season.
A special presentation of the 485 gifts collected at post offices was made to the Prisons Department this morning at the Suva General Post Office.
In making the presentation to the Commissioner of Prisons, Brigadier-General Ioane Naivalurua, the CEO of Post Fiji, Joape Kuinikoro said that Post Fiji recognised the need for prisoners’ children to be remembered during this giftgiving season and to accomplish this, “angels” were needed in Fiji. He added that Post Fiji was more than happy to be a part of this project and in
facilitating the means to enable it.
The initiative involved the members of the public wrapping up clothes, toys, or ornaments, old or new and dropping it off at any Post Office which was then forwarded by the respective Postmasters to the Head Office for today’s special presentation.
In addition to providing outlets for the public or “angels” to drop off their gifts, Post Fiji was delighted to contribute five hundred dollars ($500) to assist towards this initiative.
In receiving the gifts and cheque presented, the Commissioner iterated the thanks on behalf of the inmates whose children will be recipients of these gifts. He also expressed their appreciation of the good and kind-heartedness of the public in giving to these children for Christmas.
The Prisons Choir sang a few Christmas carols in the Post Office and entertained the public whilst waiting for the formal presentation.
